When a Big Coach Stops Driving Straight

A motorhome that pulls to one side, wanders in the lane on I-10 or wears the edges of its front tires is tiring and expensive to drive. On a heavy coach, alignment problems show up fast in the steer tires, and those tires are the most important ones on the vehicle. We align and repair the front end of motorhomes, including Class A coaches and diesel pushers, at our Phoenix shop.

Signs Your Motorhome Needs an Alignment

  • It pulls to the left or right on a flat road.
  • The steering wheel is off-center when you drive straight.
  • You keep correcting the steering, especially in crosswinds or when trucks pass.
  • The front tires wear on the inside or outside edge, or feel feathered when you run a hand across the tread.
  • You just put on new front tires.
  • You hit a curb, a pothole or a road hazard hard.
  • You recently had suspension or steering parts replaced, such as a steering stabilizer.

We Check the Front End Before We Align It

An alignment can’t fix worn parts. If a tie rod end, drag link or kingpin is loose, the numbers won’t hold and the coach will keep wandering. Before aligning, we look at:

  • Tie rod ends, drag link and kingpins.
  • Play in the steering gear and the steering stabilizer.
  • Ride height on air suspension, since the coach has to sit at the right height to be aligned correctly.
  • Wheel bearings and the condition of the front tires.

If we find worn parts or a tire problem, we explain what we found before doing more work.

Front Tires and the Arizona Heat

Many RV tires age out before the tread wears down, and the Arizona sun speeds that up. When you come in for an alignment, it’s a good time to check the date code on the sidewall (the last four digits show the week and year the tire was made) and look for cracking. Aligning a coach on old or damaged steer tires doesn’t solve the problem for long. For new tires or a blowout at your RV park, we can help with that too.

Why a Truck Shop for Motorhome Alignment

Many Class A motorhomes and diesel pushers ride on heavy chassis with the same kind of steering and suspension parts we work on every day in semi truck and trailer alignment. Our mechanics know these systems, and our shop is set up for big vehicles.

How It Works

  • Call us with the year, make, model and chassis of your motorhome, and what you’re feeling on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you align Class A motorhomes and diesel pushers?+

Yes. We align and repair suspension on motorhomes, including Class A coaches and diesel pushers.

Can you do the alignment at my RV park?+

Alignments are done at our Phoenix shop. Our mobile mechanics can come to you for other problems, such as batteries, tires and air bags.

Do I need an alignment after new tires?+

It’s a good idea on a motorhome, especially for the front tires. A bad alignment can wear out new steer tires quickly.

Why does my motorhome wander even after an alignment?+

Worn steering parts, a weak steering stabilizer, incorrect ride height or tire problems can all cause wandering. That’s why we check the front end before aligning.
